About The Customer
Keio University, located in Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan, is the oldest institute of modern higher education in the country. It serves a wide range of students, from elementary school to university and graduate school, and includes a university hospital. The university is known for its commitment to educational research and healthcare, providing a comprehensive learning environment. Keio University has separate divisions that manage, operate, and support the information technology platforms for each campus and the university hospital. The Information Technology Center (ITC) manages the educational divisions, while the Hospital Information System Division manages the hospital. The university's IT infrastructure is critical for supporting its educational and healthcare services.
The Challenge
Keio University faced challenges in managing and operating virtual environments across its campuses and university hospital. The Information Technology Center (ITC) managed the educational divisions, while the Hospital Information System Division managed the hospital. Each campus ITC struggled with the operation and management of virtual environments for education and research systems. The ITC Headquarters considered replacing the virtualization platform run by a 3-tier configuration system deployed on multiple campuses. The goal was to simplify operation and management of the virtualization infrastructure.
The Solution
Keio University selected Nutanix Enterprise Cloud as the virtualization infrastructure for its systems. The Shiba-Kyoritsu Campus was the first to install Nutanix after learning about it at a seminar. The Shonan Fujisawa Campus also planned a platform upgrade. The virtual environment running services for the entire Keio University was distributed on multiple campuses using a 3-tier configuration with shared storage. An operations review was performed at Keio University Hospital, leading to the decision to move away from a blade server environment to a flexibly scalable environment. Nutanix Enterprise Cloud was chosen for its ability to fulfill the requirements of different campuses and the university hospital.
Operational Impact
  • Keio University’s critical applications now run on the virtualization platform at each location using Nutanix Enterprise Cloud software.
  • The university uses Nutanix for various workloads at its Shiba-Kyoritsu and Shonan Fujisawa campuses.
  • ITC Headquarters runs systems provided to the entire Keio network on Nutanix, including its web system, verification platform, and LMS framework.
  • Keio University Hospital’s operational management systems run on the Lenovo ThinkAgile HX Series cluster powered by Nutanix software.
  • The system response speed has noticeably improved, and the user interface is comparable to VMware’s ESXi hypervisor.
Quantitative Benefit
  • System response speed doubled.
  • Rack space reduced by 50%.
