About The Customer
The pelzGROUP, founded in 1948 by Willy Pelz, is a dynamic and innovative company based in Wahlstedt, Germany. It comprises four companies and employs over 750 people. Initially focused on producing cotton wool for dressings and cosmetics, the company has evolved to manufacture high-quality beauty and body care products, including cotton pads, swabs, and feminine hygiene items. The pelzGROUP is known for its strong value chain and ability to quickly respond to customer requirements through innovative technologies and know-how. The company prides itself on its modern, fully automated production lines and its commitment to fulfilling customer needs efficiently.
The Challenge
In 2014, pelzGROUP sought to automate data collection on the shop floor to replace paper-based systems and improve data reliability and speed. They needed a scalable Manufacturing Execution System (MES) that could integrate with their existing processes and provide real-time data access. The challenge was to find a system that could handle the complexity of their operations, including processing multiple orders per day and managing a high volume of packaging units. Additionally, they required a solution that could integrate with their in-house developed ERP system and provide reliable key performance indicators like Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).
The Solution
The pelzGROUP implemented the HYDRA MES from MPDV in 2015, starting with the Shop Floor Data (BDE) and Machine Data (MDE) modules. This transition replaced paper-based time tickets and enabled faster, more reliable data entry into the system. A specially developed and patented terminal was used to connect machines and facilitate easy data input for operators. The system provided real-time data access and allowed for the calculation of key figures like OEE at the touch of a button. In the second phase, HYDRA's Time & Attendance (PZE) and Personnel Time Management (PZW) functions were integrated, eliminating paper use for leave applications and simplifying personnel management. The Access Control (ZKS) feature ensured that only authorized personnel could access critical areas. Future plans include implementing HYDRA's Tool & Resource Management (WRM) for digital documentation and maintenance cycle monitoring, as well as exploring HYDRA's Energy Management (EMG) and quality assurance functions.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of HYDRA MES led to the automation of data collection, replacing paper-based systems and improving data reliability and speed.
  • The system provided real-time data access, allowing for the calculation of key performance indicators like Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) at the touch of a button.
  • The integration of Time & Attendance and Personnel Time Management functions eliminated paper use for leave applications and simplified personnel management.
  • The Access Control feature ensured that only authorized personnel could access critical areas, enhancing security.
  • Future plans include implementing digital documentation and maintenance cycle monitoring, as well as exploring energy management and quality assurance functions.
Quantitative Benefit
  • 3 to 4 orders processed per day per machine.
  • Average of 50,000 packaging units produced daily.
