About The Customer
NEXT is a large fashion and home goods retailer based in Enderby, England. The company operates more than 500 stores in over 70 countries, in addition to their online presence. They also operate UK-based stores and e-commerce for multiple American fashion brands. NEXT operates 17 specialized retail distribution warehouses across the UK, each catering to different types of products. The company's engineering team consists of 700 employees, including 500 mobile users and 200 desktop users, all of whom use eMaint to standardize and streamline their operations.
The Challenge
NEXT, a UK-based retail company, operates a network of 17 specialized retail warehouses, each catering to different types of products. The company faced a significant challenge in centralizing and streamlining their operations across these warehouses. Prior to implementing eMaint, the warehouses were essentially run independently, with operations managed locally via spreadsheets. This lack of centralized management led to a lack of shared experiences and knowledge across the warehouses. Another challenge was the lack of complete Wi-Fi coverage in the large distribution centers, which made it difficult for the engineering team to work seamlessly both online and offline. The first implementation of eMaint coincided with the pandemic lockdown restrictions and Brexit, adding to the complexity of the situation.
The Solution
NEXT implemented eMaint's mobile app to standardize and streamline their operations across all 17 warehouses. The app allowed the 700-person engineering team to work seamlessly online and offline, overcoming the challenge of incomplete Wi-Fi coverage in the warehouses. The eMaint system was cloud-based and worked well over Wi-Fi, providing a stable and seamless experience for the users. The implementation of eMaint also helped NEXT to streamline communication and operations across all sites. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and Brexit, the eMaint team provided remote support throughout the implementation process. After the initial implementation, NEXT now has 10 databases across 17 sites, and the remaining rollouts were seamless.

As of 2014, AK-Centralen has over 1,500 Danish supermarkets equipped, and utilizes 16 operators, and is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. AK-Centralen needed the ability to monitor the cooling alarms from around the country, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Each and every time the door to a milk cooler or a freezer does not close properly, an alarm goes off on a computer screen in a control building in southwestern Odense. This type of alarm will go off approximately 140,000 times per year, equating to roughly 400 alarms in a 24-hour period. Should an alarm go off, then there is only a limited amount of time to act before dairy products or frozen pizza must be disposed of, and this type of waste can quickly start to cost a supermarket a great deal of money.

Supermarket Energy Savings
The client had previously deployed a one-meter-per-store monitoring program. Given the manner in which energy consumption changes with external temperature, hour of the day, day of week and month of year, a single meter solution lacked the ability to detect the difference between a true problem and a changing store environment. Most importantly, a single meter solution could never identify root cause of energy consumption changes. This approach never reduced the number of truck-rolls or man-hours required to find and resolve issues.
