About The Customer
Rolls-Royce is a renowned British brand with over a century of experience in delivering excellence through its engines. The company operates in industries that are critical to the global transition to a net zero carbon future, such as aviation. Rolls-Royce is committed to helping its customers, including airlines that use its engines, reduce their carbon emissions. The company is focused on sustainability and innovation, aiming to continue its legacy for another 100 years by embracing new technologies and ways of working. With a large corporate structure and a global presence, Rolls-Royce is a key player in the manufacturing sector, particularly in the United Kingdom.
The Challenge
Rolls-Royce, a leading British brand in the manufacturing industry, is facing the challenge of transitioning to a net zero carbon future. The company recognizes the need to decarbonize rapidly to ensure its longevity and continue delivering excellence in its engine manufacturing. The challenge is compounded by the vast amount of flight data that needs to be processed and analyzed to optimize carbon output. The existing on-premises infrastructure was insufficient to handle the data volume and processing power required for this task.
The Solution
To address the challenge of processing and analyzing vast amounts of flight data, Rolls-Royce partnered with Microsoft to leverage the Microsoft Azure platform. Azure provided the necessary compute power, scalability, and security to handle the data processing needs. By integrating Azure Databricks and Azure Machine Learning, Rolls-Royce was able to run extensive data analyses, such as processing 100 billion flights, to gain new insights. The use of Power BI further enabled the engineering team to access and utilize these insights effectively. The partnership with Microsoft not only provided the technological capabilities needed but also aligned with Rolls-Royce's commitment to sustainability and excellence.

Predictive Maintenance for Industrial Chillers
For global leaders in the industrial chiller manufacturing, reliability of the entire production process is of the utmost importance. Chillers are refrigeration systems that produce ice water to provide cooling for a process or industrial application. One of those leaders sought a way to respond to asset performance issues, even before they occur. The intelligence to guarantee maximum reliability of cooling devices is embedded (pre-alarming). A pre-alarming phase means that the cooling device still works, but symptoms may appear, telling manufacturers that a failure is likely to occur in the near future. Chillers who are not internet connected at that moment, provide little insight in this pre-alarming phase.
