About The Customer
Swagelok is a leading provider of fluid systems solutions, such as tube fittings, valves, tubing, hoses, and gauges. These components are crucial in several industries, including energy production, oil and gas, chemistry, biopharmaceutical markets, research, and semiconductor manufacture. Swagelok has more than 150 authorized sales and service centers worldwide. The team in Manchester manages over 7,000 products and has been serving customers in the North-West of England for more than 40 years.
The Challenge
Swagelok Manchester, a leading provider of fluid systems solutions, was facing a significant challenge due to the growth in documents for all of its paper-based administrative and logistical processes. The workflows were becoming increasingly time and cost-intensive. Managing filing was costing 30 minutes per day, per employee. The company had to put in weekend hours to tackle the out-of-control paper archive every quarter. The management team realized that it was time to take action and decided to implement a digital solution to manage the growing volume of documents.
The Solution
Inspired by the DocuWare system used by Swagelok’s sales and service center in Munich, the management decided to implement the same solution in Manchester. The local DocuWare Partner prepared a detailed analysis and documentation of various business processes and the existing IT infrastructure to ensure a seamless transition from analog to digital document management. The DMS implementation began in Accounting, mirroring paper-based processes in a digital manner. Once the integrity of the digital processes was confirmed, the second and third project phases were started in Order Processing and Inventory Tracking. The main task was to connect DocuWare workflows with the SCALA ERP system along with barcodes to use with their SIMPLE inventory tracking application.

Hospital Inventory Management
The hospital supply chain team is responsible for ensuring that the right medical supplies are readily available to clinicians when and where needed, and to do so in the most efficient manner possible. However, many of the systems and processes in use at the cancer center for supply chain management were not best suited to support these goals. Barcoding technology, a commonly used method for inventory management of medical supplies, is labor intensive, time consuming, does not provide real-time visibility into inventory levels and can be prone to error. Consequently, the lack of accurate and real-time visibility into inventory levels across multiple supply rooms in multiple hospital facilities creates additional inefficiency in the system causing over-ordering, hoarding, and wasted supplies. Other sources of waste and cost were also identified as candidates for improvement. Existing systems and processes did not provide adequate security for high-cost inventory within the hospital, which was another driver of cost. A lack of visibility into expiration dates for supplies resulted in supplies being wasted due to past expiry dates. Storage of supplies was also a key consideration given the location of the cancer center’s facilities in a dense urban setting, where space is always at a premium. In order to address the challenges outlined above, the hospital sought a solution that would provide real-time inventory information with high levels of accuracy, reduce the level of manual effort required and enable data driven decision making to ensure that the right supplies were readily available to clinicians in the right location at the right time.

IoT Solution for Cold Chain
Most of the customer's warehouses run on utility and generator power. Since these warehouses are in remote locations, power outages are a very common scenario. Diesel fuel, thereby, becomes a significant cost for these warehouses. Energy consumption was also very high due to the lack of a consistent temperature throughout the facility. This lack of a consistent temperature in all areas and no way to control it, resulted in the customer losing a significant amount of their temperature sensitive goods due to spoilage.

Hardware Retailer Uses Data Warehouse to Track Inventory
Ace tracked which products retailers ordered, when they were ordered and shipped. However, the company could not track or forecast actual sales. Data used for reporting was up to a one-week old, owing to performance and data cleansing issues. Requirement to integrate wholesale and inventory data with POS data to help drive key business decisions, improve category management, lower inventory costs and optimize pricing. Reliance on custom coding to integrate POS data was excessively resource intensive and led to major performance constraints.
