The Challenge
In the OEM sector, demands for speed, quality, and cost control are rising. OEMs are targeting higher levels of automation for their production lines to meet stringent client requirements around just-in-time and just-in-sequence product deliveries without increasing operational costs. However, automating an entire production line with multiple systems from different vendors presents challenges. Unomic has been developing the ELFiNOS platform to support larger and more diverse clients in the manufacturing sector as edge computing and IIoT technologies mature.
The Solution
Unomic transitioned from an open-source mobile framework to a new microservices architecture based on the Akka Platform from Lightbend. This change was driven by the need for a more robust and flexible approach to data stream processing due to increased data volume and velocity from IIoT and edge workloads. The Akka Platform allows for real-time data processing and automation of OEM production lines. Unomic's ELFiNOS platform now serves leading OEMs, enabling them to reduce lead times, cut defect ratios, and boost asset utilization. Additionally, Unomic is piloting a healthcare-informatics-as-a-service solution that uses ELFiNOS machine-learning models to identify early indicators of dementia from MRI scans, with testing underway in six major hospitals in South Korea.
