About The Customer
Banco Latinoamericano de Comercio Exterior, S.A. (Bladex) is a multinational bank established in 1979 by the central banks of Latin-American and Caribbean countries. Headquartered in Panama City, Panama, Bladex was created to promote foreign trade and economic integration in the region. The bank has expanded its operations with offices in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, the United States, and a representative license in Peru. Bladex serves a diverse customer base, including financial institutions and corporations, and is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: BLX). The bank's shareholders include central banks, state-owned banks, commercial banks, financial institutions, and institutional and retail investors. Bladex is committed to supporting regional economic development and has been investing in cybersecurity to protect against advanced threats and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
The Challenge
Bladex faced significant challenges in complying with numerous privacy and security regulatory requirements while dealing with increasingly advanced cyber threats, particularly ransomware. The global pandemic further complicated matters by forcing employees to work remotely, which necessitated securing remote work environments. Additionally, the bank struggled with managing, maintaining, and updating its cybersecurity infrastructure, which was cumbersome and required significant resources. The existing on-premises solution was complex, requiring multiple servers and consoles, and demanded frequent updates and internal projects to keep up with evolving threats.
The Solution
Bladex implemented the CrowdStrike Falcon Platform to address its cybersecurity challenges. This cloud-native solution replaced multiple legacy products, simplifying security management and reducing infrastructure costs. The Falcon Platform includes advanced threat protection modules such as Falcon Insight for endpoint detection and response, Falcon Prevent for next-gen antivirus, Falcon Intelligence for threat intelligence, and Falcon OverWatch for threat hunting. The platform's cloud-based architecture allows for centralized management, reducing the need for multiple servers and consoles. Bladex deployed the solution across 350 laptops and servers, as well as 100 mobile devices, enhancing endpoint protection and compliance capabilities. The Falcon Platform's intuitive interface and comprehensive features have made it easier for Bladex to manage its cybersecurity infrastructure, allowing the bank to focus on other business priorities.
Operational Impact
  • Bladex experienced a significant reduction in security infrastructure costs, as the cloud-native Falcon Platform eliminated the need for multiple on-premises servers.
  • The bank's IT team reported a decrease in average monthly help desk tickets from 25 to 0, indicating improved user experience and satisfaction.
  • The centralized management and advanced threat protection capabilities of the Falcon Platform enabled Bladex to accelerate business-building projects by redirecting IT staff to focus on strategic initiatives.
  • The comprehensive data collection and visibility provided by the Falcon Platform facilitated easier compliance with regulatory requirements, enhancing Bladex's ability to meet external audit demands.
  • The integration of various security modules into a single platform improved endpoint visibility and threat awareness, allowing Bladex to establish immediate action plans for vulnerability management.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Reduction in security infrastructure costs by 50%
  • Decreased average monthly help desk tickets from 25 to 0
