Children’s Mercy Kansas City

About The Customer
Children’s Mercy Kansas City is a rapidly growing healthcare institution with a diverse and expanding inventory of specialized connected medical assets. The organization has a team of experienced staff, but the collaboration between BioMed, Clinical Engineering, and Security was lacking a common data foundation. The institution was keen on accelerating its Cisco ISE deployment to cover unmanaged medical devices and was looking for a solution that could provide a dynamic, risk-scored inventory of connected assets and an accurate correlation of known vulnerabilities to existing devices.
The Challenge
Children’s Mercy Kansas City, a rapidly growing healthcare institution, was facing significant challenges in managing its diverse and expanding inventory of specialized connected medical assets. The organization was keen on accelerating its Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE) deployment to cover unmanaged medical devices. However, the collaboration between BioMed, Clinical Engineering, and Security was hampered by the lack of a common data foundation. The institution was in dire need of a solution that could provide a dynamic, risk-scored inventory of connected assets and an accurate correlation of known vulnerabilities to existing devices. Additionally, the organization was looking for a solution that could auto-generate remediation instruction sets and assign them to staff members with relevant experience.
The Solution
Children’s Mercy Kansas City turned to Medigate, an IoT cybersecurity solution hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS), to address its challenges. Medigate's ability to risk score inventory and correlate existing threats to potentially impacted devices established early project momentum and motivated leadership to push forward future phases of its Cisco ISE implementation. Medigate provided auto-generated security policy baselines that reignited the project. The solution sends device profiles to ISE that are automatically updated as changes occur. Device-specific security policies were also auto-generated and delivered to ISE, a capability that leadership viewed as game-changing. Leadership combined device-specific profiles with device-specific security policy to close its enforcement loop.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of Medigate’s IoT cybersecurity solution resulted in significant operational improvements at Children’s Mercy Kansas City. The organization achieved its asset visibility-based objectives and was able to accelerate the completion of project phases targeting unmanaged medical devices. The solution enabled the elimination of many outdated, manual workflows spanning asset management and security, freeing up cross-functional staff to pursue more valuable work and collaborate more effectively. The project’s overall success, credited to leadership’s enlightened view of enterprise information security practice, resulted in an overall morale boost within the organization.
Quantitative Benefit
  • The Cisco ISE project was completed ahead of schedule
  • The project was completed under budget
  • Outdated, manual workflows spanning asset management and security were quickly eliminated
