About The Customer
Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG is a traditional company established in 1850, based in Heidelberg, Germany. It is a market leader in sheet-fed offset printing machines with approximately 20,000 employees worldwide. The company's headquarters integrates the R&D, Administration, Sales and Marketing departments and is located just 12 kilometres from its assembly unit in Wiesloch-Walldorf, the city with the world's largest printing machine plant. The company is known for its technical complexity, producing sophisticated printing machines and creating extensive operating and maintenance manuals, spare parts catalogues, and thousands of illustrations and graphics.
The Challenge
Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, a leading print manufacturing equipment company, faced a significant challenge in managing the technical complexity of their printing machines. The company had to deal with the creation of operating and maintenance manuals, spare parts catalogues, and thousands of illustrations and graphics. Until 2005, they used the Interleaf Publishing System for manuals and Mondello illustrations software for catalogues. However, the underlying content management system proved inadequate for their needs. The company sought a future-proof graphics tool that could handle their extensive needs, particularly in terms of transferring existing data from Mondello and Interleaf systems. They also needed a tool that could effectively interface with various CAD systems and other solutions.
The Solution
Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG developed a corporate SAP-based solution and chose Corel DESIGNER as their graphics tool after a six-month evaluation period. Corel DESIGNER's comprehensive feature set was found to be perfectly suited to the extensive needs of the technical writing team. The company also benefited from a close collaboration with Corel, the Canadian graphics software editor. Corel addressed the manufacturer's needs by developing a 'freehand lasso feature' that allows users to quickly and precisely extract parts that standard tools could only capture inaccurately. The company also created standardized templates to ensure consistency across all departments and illustrators. Corel DESIGNER fully supports industry-wide file formats—CGM, TIFF and PDF—as well as future-oriented formats such as SVG. For training purposes, the company relied on the 'train the trainer' principle, with employees passing on their knowledge to their colleagues after a three-day Corel-led training session.

Predictive Maintenance for Industrial Chillers
For global leaders in the industrial chiller manufacturing, reliability of the entire production process is of the utmost importance. Chillers are refrigeration systems that produce ice water to provide cooling for a process or industrial application. One of those leaders sought a way to respond to asset performance issues, even before they occur. The intelligence to guarantee maximum reliability of cooling devices is embedded (pre-alarming). A pre-alarming phase means that the cooling device still works, but symptoms may appear, telling manufacturers that a failure is likely to occur in the near future. Chillers who are not internet connected at that moment, provide little insight in this pre-alarming phase.
