Playing the Field is a dating app designed for sports fans. The app aims to help sports fans connect on a platonic or romantic basis, and share the same sports fan lifestyle. Users can sign up for an account by providing their email address and phone number, which then goes through a verification process. Once verified, the app requests access to their location and users can fill out their profile. Their profile includes questions about gender, gender interest, relationship status, reason for using the app, date of birth, favorite team, and profile picture. Users can select up to 5 favorite teams and upload up to 5 pictures to display.
The Challenge
Michael Katos, the founder of Playing the Field, faced the challenge of creating a platform that would allow sports fans to connect on a platonic or romantic basis. As a self-taught web developer and a passionate sports fan, he wanted to build an app that would cater to the unique lifestyle of sports fans. However, he encountered difficulties in setting up servers, databases, and other back-end infrastructure, which are crucial in the development of an app. Additionally, he was faced with the challenge of building a minimum viable product (MVP) on his own, without a technical team, due to the constraints brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Solution
Katos turned to Bubble, a no-code platform, to build, customize, and launch his app. Bubble's platform enabled him to overcome the technical challenges he faced, as it eliminated the need for setting up servers, databases, and other back-end infrastructure. The app, available as a web app, allows U.S. based users over age 18 to sign up for an account, fill out their profile, and connect with other users based on shared interests in sports teams. The app also features a 'card deck' screen where users can see potential matches and declare their interest. Katos was able to launch a beta version of the app within six weeks of using Bubble's platform.
