About The Customer
The customer in this case study is the production team of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, led by director Robert Rodriguez. The team included editor Ian Silverstein, first assistant editor/digital conform editor Jay Mahavier, and VFX editor Travis Smith. Rodriguez is known for his hands-on approach to filmmaking, often taking on multiple roles in the production process. He has a strong vision but is also open to ideas, making him a collaborative leader. The team was also simultaneously working on the first two episodes of From Dusk till Dawn: The Series, which Rodriguez developed and executive produced for his new El Rey channel and Netflix.
The Challenge
The challenge was to foster creative collaboration among editors, VFX, the sound supervisor, and director Robert Rodriguez for the production of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. The team needed to streamline and simplify workflows, enhance collaboration, and allow creative teams to experiment with different creative ideas under tight time and cost pressures. The production involved multiple editorial venues and staff working simultaneously. Rodriguez worked from his home in Austin, Texas, while other members of the editorial team were based at Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Austin. The team was also simultaneously working on the first two episodes of From Dusk till Dawn: The Series, which required all the media for the entire season to be kept online.
The Solution
The team leveraged the Avid MediaCentral platform to streamline and simplify workflows. By tightly integrating Avid Artist Suite and Avid Storage Suite solutions, including Media Composer, Avid ISIS shared storage, and Avid Pro Tools | HDX, the MediaCentral platform brought the Avid Everywhere vision to life for the long-awaited sequel. The platform allowed for constant back and forth collaboration, providing multiple versions of scenes and a constantly evolving process. The Media Composer was praised for its personal system that speaks to what film and TV editors need, offering creative tools to implement the director’s vision. Pro Tools | HDX was used for Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, with four systems—for dialogue, music, effects plus a stem recorder—linked and controlled on Troublemakers’ mix stage using Avid Satellite Link.

Turning A Stadium Into A Smart Building
Honeywell created what it called the “intelligent system” for the National Stadium in Beijing, China, turning the venue for the opening and closing events at the 2008 Summer Olympics into a “smart building.” Designed by highly controversial artist Ai Weiwei, the “Bird’s Nest” remains one of the most impressive feats of stadium architecture in the world. The 250,000 square meter structure housed more than 100,000 athletes and spectators at a time. To accommodate such capacity, China turned to Honeywell’s EBI Integrated Building Management System to create an integrated “intelligent system” for improved building security, safety and energy efficiency.

Predictive Maintenance for Industrial Chillers
For global leaders in the industrial chiller manufacturing, reliability of the entire production process is of the utmost importance. Chillers are refrigeration systems that produce ice water to provide cooling for a process or industrial application. One of those leaders sought a way to respond to asset performance issues, even before they occur. The intelligence to guarantee maximum reliability of cooling devices is embedded (pre-alarming). A pre-alarming phase means that the cooling device still works, but symptoms may appear, telling manufacturers that a failure is likely to occur in the near future. Chillers who are not internet connected at that moment, provide little insight in this pre-alarming phase.

Integration of PLC with IoT for Bosch Rexroth
The application arises from the need to monitor and anticipate the problems of one or more machines managed by a PLC. These problems, often resulting from the accumulation over time of small discrepancies, require, when they occur, ex post technical operations maintenance.
