About The Customer
Aberdeen City Council is an ambitious local council in the United Kingdom, serving more than 227,000 residents in a vibrant and growing city. The council supports over five thousand workers, who prior to the digitalisation project, used a mix of nearly 100 different makes and models of devices. In October 2020, Aberdeen City Council was named Local Authority of the Year at the prestigious Municipal Journal Achievement Awards. The council began working with Microsoft two years ago on a wide-ranging digitalisation project aimed at driving improvements in service delivery as well as time and cost efficiencies.
The Challenge
Aberdeen City Council, serving over 227,000 residents, embarked on a digitalisation project with Microsoft to improve service delivery and achieve time and cost efficiencies. The council supports more than five thousand workers who use either a desktop or laptop computer. Prior to the digitalisation project, these users had a mix of nearly 100 different makes and models of devices. This diversity of devices posed a challenge in terms of management and efficiency. The council needed to streamline this to a handful of optimal devices that would not only improve productivity but also simplify the management process for the IT team.
The Solution
Aberdeen City Council chose to standardise all user devices on the Microsoft Surface family of devices. This decision was driven by the need for greater flexibility, improved productivity for users, and simplified device management for the IT team. The council also leveraged the benefits of Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Azure in conjunction with the Microsoft Surface devices. This provided additional interoperability benefits, including enhanced security. The cloud capabilities of Microsoft Endpoint Manager and Microsoft Azure were deemed to best support the organisation. The council was able to securely rollout and manage its Microsoft Surface devices throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring vital services were not disrupted.
Operational Impact
  • The digital transformation of Aberdeen City Council has had significant operational benefits. The standardisation of devices has simplified the management process for the IT team, while the interoperability of the Microsoft Surface devices with Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive has improved productivity. The enhanced security provided by Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Azure has also been a key benefit. The council was able to maintain vital services during the COVID-19 pandemic, with staff able to work efficiently from home or other locations. The council is now considering how to integrate these new ways of working into best practice moving forward.
