EMC's Transition to SMS for Real-Time IT Alerts - Twilio Industrial IoT Case Study
EMC's Transition to SMS for Real-Time IT Alerts
EMC, a global leader in cloud computing, data storage, and data virtualization, was struggling with an inefficient and slow method of alerting its 68,000 employees about IT system updates. The traditional method involved drafting an email, proofing it, getting approval from several stakeholders, and finally sending it. This process was not only labor-intensive but also unreliable as it depended on the user's email being unaffected and the user actually opening and reading the email. After sending 1.2 million alert emails in a single month, EMC decided to find a more efficient and immediate way to alert employees. The challenge was to find a solution that was not only faster and less labor-intensive but also globally available and scalable to EMC's needs.

Identifying Vane Failure From Combustion Turbine Data - SparkCognition Industrial IoT Case Study
Identifying Vane Failure From Combustion Turbine Data
In late 2015, a deployed combustion turbine experienced a row two vane failure, which caused massive secondary damage to the compressor, resulting in nearly two months of downtime and up to $30M in repairs costs and lost opportunity. This failure, though rare, is representative of typical catastrophic events that are very difficult to catch. Though the onsite plant operations team had been monitoring the asset, this specific failure mode was previously unknown and very nuanced, and existing alarms did not have enough information for SMEs to properly diagnose it in time. The OEM decided to evaluate SparkCognition’s predictive analytics solution, SparkPredict®, with the following objectives:1. Demonstrate the ability to detect and distinguish operational and anomalous online steady-state conditions based on blind data provided from the turbine.2. Provide additional insights about the key contributing factors to the underlying anomalies.3. Provide a UI that interfaces to live streaming data from the asset.

Maximizing ROI in Mining Operations with IoT: A Case Study of Los Pelambres Copper Mine
Los Pelambres, a copper mine located in Salamanca, Chile, faced a significant challenge in its operations. The mine, which is the seventh largest producer of copper in the world, relied on 55 Komatsu mining trucks for the transportation of copper. In an effort to maximize asset utilization, the mine adopted a fast refueling system that reduced refueling time from 25 to approximately 5 minutes. However, this initiative led to a series of unexpected issues. The factory-installed fuel sensors ruptured due to the pressure from the fast refueling system. Without a working fuel sensor, drivers had to guess when to refuel and how much fuel to add back into the tank. This led to frequent under or overfilling of the tanks, causing operational delays and increased downtime. The mine needed a solution that could withstand the pressure from the fast refueling system, relay fuel level and truck location data back to a centralized application, and include a user-friendly interface for monitoring.

Scalable Global Routing for Hybrid Cloud in the Insurance Industry - BlueCat Networks Industrial IoT Case Study
Scalable Global Routing for Hybrid Cloud in the Insurance Industry
A multinational insurer had heavily invested in Azure five years ago and was now facing a challenge with cloud expansion. The company had around 20 application sites and over 450 user sites to interconnect, and it wanted to maintain seamless operations. More importantly, it wanted to ensure consistent policy enforcement, security, and risk management across its entire hybrid estate. The security and risk team had mandated the use of private IP for internal network resources. However, the cloud team, without fully understanding the networking implications, deployed Private Endpoints in Azure to secure the IP. This made it impossible to resolve DNS and ensure connectivity between data center resources and Azure DNS zones. The cloud team realized that they could not meet both their security and scalability requirements using their Azure toolset alone.

Blue Bottle Coffee Enhances Ordering Accuracy and Reduces Waste with ML-Driven Demand Forecasting - Provectus Industrial IoT Case Study
Blue Bottle Coffee Enhances Ordering Accuracy and Reduces Waste with ML-Driven Demand Forecasting
Blue Bottle Coffee (BBC), a global coffee roaster and retailer, faced a significant challenge in managing the supply of pastries across its international network of cafes. The company was using a manual ordering system, where cafe leaders estimated the required quantity of pastries based on historical sales data, current inventory, and growth projections. This system was effective when BBC had a few cafes, but with over 70 cafes worldwide, it became inefficient and inaccurate. The inaccuracies led to either under-ordering, causing sell-outs and customer dissatisfaction, or over-ordering, resulting in food waste and profit loss. The suboptimal utilization of pastries was also affecting BBC's bottom line. Therefore, BBC needed a scalable, precise, and predictive ordering solution to improve pastry ordering accuracy, reduce food waste, and meet its sustainability goals.

4flow: Enhancing Supply Chain Efficiency with Real-Time Data - Shippeo Industrial IoT Case Study
4flow: Enhancing Supply Chain Efficiency with Real-Time Data
4flow, a leading global provider of supply chain consulting, software and fourth party logistics (4PL) services, was facing a challenge in managing logistics networks proactively and efficiently due to a lack of real-time visibility. This lack of visibility resulted in increased costs from deviations and exceptions, such as late penalties and dispute management costs, and in worst cases, extended supply chain disruptions. Late identified delays meant the time needed to take preventative measures was lost, potentially leading to late fees and penalties. If shipping status data was not automatically exchanged between supply chain partners, time-consuming manual communication between carriers, customers and transport planners was also required. Additionally, carrier performance was difficult to manage without objective data. As a neutral 4PL that is not fleet-based, 4flow did not have access to real-time transportation data and was looking for a strong partner to provide visibility to its customers.

Scalability Through IoT: Dillon Transportation's Growth with Innovative Access - Trimble Industrial IoT Case Study
Scalability Through IoT: Dillon Transportation's Growth with Innovative Access
Dillon Transportation, a dry van transportation company, experienced significant growth since its inception in 1996. From a humble beginning with one truck and two drivers, the company expanded to a fleet of 125 trucks and 170 drivers and crew members. However, this rapid growth brought about a challenge. The owner, Donnie Dillon, found it increasingly difficult to keep track of every driver and truck in his fleet. He could no longer remember the specifics of each trip, which he previously kept in his head. The company needed a more sophisticated way of storing information about drivers and loads. They required a system that would allow employees to access the specifics of each trip easily. The challenge was to find a solution that could manage the growing complexity of their operations.

As the company expanded, it had to deal with the complexities of managing fulfillment across multiple facilities, each with its own Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), software, and onboarding teams. The task of adding warehouses to scale and managing automated fulfillment business rules for carriers and Service Level Agreements (SLAs) was proving to be a major undertaking. This was diverting time and resources away from the company's primary goal - growth of the brand. The challenge was to streamline and optimize the supply chain without compromising on the brand's commitment to comfort and sustainability.
