挑战
Alcoa, a leading producer of primary and fabricated aluminum, aimed to integrate sustainability with its business operations to enable financial success, environmental excellence, and social responsibility. The company needed to ensure full compliance with regulations, standards, and company policies across its global operations. Alcoa also sought to continuously improve its management processes to drive operational excellence. The challenge was to manage compliance with over 1,200 active permits, including 2,500 rules and 225,000 requirement citations, across 250 jurisdictions worldwide, as well as adhering to 87 Alcoa corporate standards and a host of international standards.
解决方案
Alcoa deployed a global Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) and sustainability software platform, Sphera Essential Suite, across its 170 facilities in 32 countries. The system now contains more than 40,000 contacts and at least 10,000 named users, including 4,500 active users, working in 13 languages. The Sphera global software platform has helped Alcoa hold down costs by eliminating the need to maintain hundreds of legacy systems, reducing the likelihood of regulatory fines, and minimizing disruption due to staff turnover. Alcoa also uses Sphera CyberRegs, an online content service that tracks thousands of federal and state mandates. With near-real-time visibility into regulatory requirements and internal corporate standards, Alcoa managers use Sphera Essential Suite to assign EHS compliance tasks and ensure they are completed both properly and on time.

Continuous Casting Machines in a Steel Factory
With a very broad range of applications, steel is an important material and has been developed into the most extensive alloy in the engineering world. Since delivering high quality is absolutely crucial for steel plants, ensuring maximum productivity and the best quality production are the keys to competitiveness in the steel industry. Additionally, working conditions in steel factories are not suitable for workers to stay in for long periods of time, so manufactures usually adopt various machines to complete the steel production processes. However, the precision of these machines is often overestimated and the lack of flexibility also makes supervisors unable to adjust operating procedures. A renowned steel factory in Asia planned to improve its Distributed Control System (DCS) of furnaces as well as addressing the problem of insufficient accuracy. However, most well-known international equipment suppliers can not provide a satisfactory solution and local maintenance because the project needed new technologies to more accurately control equipment operations. By implementing Advantech’s automated monitoring and control solution, steel factories can not only improve the manufacturing processes but can also allow users to add additional functions to the existing system so as to make sure the operation runs at high efficiency.
