In 2009, the company faced significant challenges with its internal DNS management, which was handled using Microsoft Active Directory and Microsoft DNS and DHCP. The DNS issues were causing frequent problems, taking up hours of staff time each week. A newly hired Linux and UNIX administrator identified DNS as the root cause of many business problems, noting that DNS issues had a cascading effect on the network. The company had seven separate Microsoft domains and no IP address management, leading to difficulties in identifying IP address assignments. The existing system lacked the tools to reconcile discrepancies, requiring more human effort than the company could afford. When a new CIO joined, the opportunity arose to make a change, and the administrator suggested repurposing Infoblox appliances for internal DNS management.

The company implemented Infoblox DDI for internal DNS management, along with Infoblox Switch Port Manager for 500 devices. They also partnered with Accuvant for project management and services. The solution involved using an external DNS service controlled by the Infoblox Grid, and deploying four additional Infoblox 1410 appliances to handle DNS and DHCP services. The Active Directory servers were repurposed to act as caches, supporting dynamic DNS through integration with Infoblox. This setup allowed the company to eliminate DNS problems and streamline system software updates. The Infoblox DNS Advisor tool was instrumental in testing DNS configuration, consistency, and security, helping to set migration goals and assess results. The Infoblox Grid technology enabled automatic system-wide updates, providing a seamless update mechanism with zero downtime.
