Cardinal Innovations was using a traditional three-tier IT architecture for its healthcare applications and services, which was complex and difficult to manage. The infrastructure was more like five tiers, involving multiple products such as Cisco Nexus Unified Fabric, Cisco UCS servers, EMC VNX 5400 storage systems, and VMware’s ESX hypervisor. Managing these components was time-consuming, and scaling was challenging due to the 'tipping points' of each component. The IT team faced difficulties in keeping track of different product versions and ensuring solution compatibility, which led to issues in the Citrix environment. Additionally, a merger with another managed care organization required Cardinal Innovations to integrate 215 new employees quickly, prompting the need for a more efficient and scalable IT solution.

Cardinal Innovations decided to transition to a hyperconverged infrastructure, selecting Nutanix as the most complete solution among the vendors evaluated. They purchased 21 Nutanix nodes, including a mix of hybrid and all-flash systems, to run all enterprise workloads such as MS SQL databases, SaaS applications, MS GP Dynamics, MS SharePoint, and MS Exchange. The organization also adopted the Nutanix AHV hypervisor for its Citrix VDI environment, eliminating significant VMware licensing costs. The Nutanix platform simplified infrastructure management, allowing Cardinal Innovations to consolidate and replace its old infrastructure as existing system licenses expired. The transition to Nutanix enabled faster deployment, easier scalability, and reduced management complexity, aligning with the organization's goal of efficient IT operations.

The hospital supply chain team is responsible for ensuring that the right medical supplies are readily available to clinicians when and where needed, and to do so in the most efficient manner possible. However, many of the systems and processes in use at the cancer center for supply chain management were not best suited to support these goals. In order to address the challenges outlined above, the hospital sought a solution that would provide real-time inventory information with high levels of accuracy, reduce the level of manual effort required and enable data driven decision making to ensure that the right supplies were readily available to clinicians in the right location at the right time.
