With over 15 years of experience, Justicia Lab has developed more than a dozen legal tools that have assisted over 500,000 people in finding critical immigration information and relief. The organization is committed to transforming immigrant justice through collaboration, creativity, and technology, working closely with immigrant communities to ensure their needs are met. Justicia Lab's mission is to help immigrants navigate the complex immigration system, achieve workplace justice, and access necessary legal services. By partnering with technology industry leaders and advocacy groups, Justicia Lab aims to bridge the gap between immigrant-serving organizations and AI technology developers, promoting responsible and ethical use of AI to enhance access to justice for immigrants.

The immigrant community faces significant challenges in accessing justice due to a lack of resources and understanding of the legal system. With over 11 million immigrants in the U.S. lacking legal status, and only one legal professional available for every 1,400 undocumented persons, there is a pressing need for innovative solutions to bridge this gap. Additionally, there is a widespread misunderstanding and distrust of AI technologies within the immigrant community, which poses a barrier to leveraging these tools for justice. Many nonprofits and legal professionals also feel unprepared for the impacts of generative AI, with over a third rating their understanding of AI as low. This situation is compounded by the rapidly changing immigration policy landscape in the U.S., which requires timely and accurate information dissemination to immigrants.

Justicia Lab AI, supported by Google.org, is an initiative designed to address the challenges faced by the immigrant community by leveraging AI technologies. The lab focuses on three key areas: promoting the responsible use of AI, co-designing and prototyping AI solutions, and delivering public education and workshops on AI. By forming an AI Advisory Group, Justicia Lab AI aims to inform lab projects and develop ethical AI solutions that prioritize privacy, security, and language access. The lab is also developing an AI assistant to help immigrants understand their legal options, provide actionable information, and offer automatic updates on their cases. Additionally, Justicia Lab AI is committed to educating nonprofit organizations, legal service providers, and public sector collaborators on the potential of AI to make a positive impact. Through workshops and training programs, the lab seeks to empower over 200 nonprofit partners and 10,000 immigrant advocates to leverage AI technologies effectively.

Zapier, a company that enables non-technical users to push data between hundreds of web applications, was facing a challenge in automating and provisioning servers for optimal performance. The company's environment consisted of 50 Linux servers on the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), a Django application split across several servers, and a backend consisting of a dynamic number of celery task workers fed by messages published to a RabbitMQ cluster. They also maintained a number of internal web services on nginx in front of Gunicorn and Node.js processes. Redis handled simple key and value stores, with logging handled by Graylog2 and ElasticSearch. However, they realized that no level of automation would be sufficient without an effective monitoring solution in place. They needed a tool that could provide immediate alerts when something was breaking and could be easily implemented into their environment.
