The city has previously attempted to alleviate parking congestion through a combination of parking garages, lots, and meters. However, these measures have not fully addressed the issue, prompting the Downtown San Mateo Association (DSMA) and the city to explore technological solutions to better manage parking inventory and improve the business climate.

San Mateo has partnered with Cisco and Streetline to implement a smart parking solution that leverages Cisco's intelligent networking technology and Streetline's sensor technology. This collaboration has enabled the city to offer real-time parking availability through the Parker™ app, which provides hands-free voice navigation to guide drivers to open parking spaces. Additionally, the ParkerMap™ feature allows merchants to integrate parking information into their websites, enhancing customer experience and increasing foot traffic. The solution also includes biweekly reports and consultations with Streetline's client services team, providing valuable insights for continuous improvement. The Netherlands are well-known for their inland waterways, canals, sluices and of course port activities. The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure indicates that there are thousands of buoys and fixed items in and near water environments that would profit from IoT monitoring.
