The University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT) is a group of hospitals serving North Lancashire and South Cumbria in the North West of England. They offer a wide range of services, including full emergency, critical/coronary care, diagnostics, and planned outpatient care. They also provide outreach and community services throughout their coverage area in homes, community centres, and clinics. The University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT) was facing the challenge of maintaining high-level patient service during the winter months when hospitals are typically overwhelmed by a patient surge. The operational staff were concerned about how they would cope with the rising demand for urgent care services. The challenge was to find effective and practical innovations to improve support for workers and overall patient care. The goal was to develop a solution that was business- and customer-led, tackled the big issues, and was focused on customer and business solutions.

UHMBT developed a Qlik Analytical Command centre, a physical room within the hospital filled with huge touchscreens that displayed analytical depictions of the movement of patients through their system in real time. They collected data regarding every point of the typical patient journey, including ambulance, admission, treatment, and patient discharge. To integrate staff into the analytics process, they used Qlik Alerting to ensure users could access the application from multiple devices and receive notifications when certain conditions were met. This allowed them to bring the benefits of data analysis to the staff and cut through the noise of healthcare data.
