Established in 1952, the organization serves local and national communities with over 38,000 policies covering more than 79,000 customers across Australia. As a long-time customer of Yellowfin since 2013, St.LukesHealth has successfully automated its data manipulation, visualization, and reporting efforts around member payroll processes. With over 30 active users of Yellowfin, the organization has transformed its reporting processes into a more time-efficient and engaging format using Yellowfin Stories.

St.LukesHealth faced challenges in enhancing its monthly reporting and information flow to better communicate critical insights for leadership analysis. The existing process involved distributing data using external tools like long-form emails, Word documents, and PowerPoint slides, which proved time-consuming and resulted in a lack of interactivity and effective distribution. Additionally, the organization had several ad-hoc reporting use cases, such as benchmarking against other health funds using datasets from industry compliance bodies. These reports were distributed in Excel and Word, creating challenges around ensuring effective and timely distribution.

To address the challenges, St.LukesHealth explored Yellowfin's data storytelling product, Stories, to transform its reporting processes. The fund's first driver for selecting Stories was its presentation and distribution options, allowing creators to update people using a long-form, blog-style format and share it across devices quickly. This unified interface replaced the disparate nature of using external tools for data reporting, enabling report creators to share findings and insights in a more appealing medium. The second driver was the need for better ad-hoc reporting methods, allowing for more impactful non-monthly updates. Stories enabled users to click, drill, and hover over embedded data in charts while reading a more detailed story. Finally, as Stories is part of the same Business Improvement platform used for dashboards, it provided an easier method for embedding analytical content, such as graph visualizations and tables, into updates, alleviating time constraints for both report creators and the audience.

Hospital Inventory Management
The hospital supply chain team is responsible for ensuring that the right medical supplies are readily available to clinicians when and where needed, and to do so in the most efficient manner possible. However, many of the systems and processes in use at the cancer center for supply chain management were not best suited to support these goals. Barcoding technology, a commonly used method for inventory management of medical supplies, is labor intensive, time consuming, does not provide real-time visibility into inventory levels and can be prone to error. Consequently, the lack of accurate and real-time visibility into inventory levels across multiple supply rooms in multiple hospital facilities creates additional inefficiency in the system causing over-ordering, hoarding, and wasted supplies. A lack of visibility into expiration dates for supplies resulted in supplies being wasted due to past expiry dates. Storage of supplies was also a key consideration given the location of the cancer center’s facilities in a dense urban setting, where space is always at a premium. In order to address the challenges outlined above, the hospital sought a solution that would provide real-time inventory information with high levels of accuracy, reduce the level of manual effort required and enable data driven decision making to ensure that the right supplies were readily available to clinicians in the right location at the right time.
